Description
Consumer lending sits at the heart of what community financial institutions do every day. It is where conversations turn into credit decisions, policies meet real lives, and trust is built loan by loan.
Our newly updated Consumer Lending Certificate program brings the entire consumer lending lifecycle together in one cohesive learning experience. This 3-credit program replaces CFTEA’s prior material with current regulations, modern lending practices, fraud awareness, and today’s credit evaluation standards.
You will move from foundational concepts through regulation, credit reporting, underwriting, fraud prevention, and the full lending process. Each course connects directly to real lending roles, decisions, and documentation so learning translates immediately to practice.
Guided Learning is CFTEA’s most flexible format. You have up to six months to complete the program, with extensions available when life or work schedules shift. This structure allows you to move at a steady pace while balancing professional responsibilities.
This guided learning experience includes videos, practical resources, and scenario-based learning to reinforce concepts and build confidence across the consumer lending function.
Completing this full program earns the CFTEA Consumer Lending Certificate, applies toward multiple CFTEA awards, and counts toward the Business Administration Degree with a Banking Major through our college partnership.
Consumer Lending Certificate – Included Courses
Introduction to Consumer Lending
Provides a practical foundation in how consumer credit works from both the lender and borrower perspective. You will explore why people borrow, how repayment is evaluated, and the most common consumer loan products used in everyday banking. Realistic scenarios connect concepts to decisions staff face with customers. Ideal for branch staff and anyone building consumer lending knowledge.
The Role of Regulation in Consumer Lending
Brings lending laws into practical focus for everyday banking work. You will explore how fair lending, disclosures, credit reporting, privacy, and collections requirements shape decisions from first inquiry through servicing. Scenarios connect regulatory intent to real conversations and documentation, helping you support consistent, fair lending.
Consumer Credit Reporting, Credit Bureaus, Credit Scoring and Related Policy Issues
Explains how credit data is gathered, reported, and used in lending decisions. You will explore how credit bureaus build reports, how scores are developed, and what policy and accuracy issues can affect both lenders and borrowers. Strengthens your ability to interpret credit information and use it responsibly.
Overview of the Five Stages of the Lending Process
Shows how a loan moves from first conversation through repayment. You will walk through application, investigation, decision, processing, and follow up, and see how each stage connects to the next. Helps you understand how documentation, servicing, and customer communication all tie back to the original credit decision.
Preventing Consumer Loan Fraud
Helps you recognize and respond to the subtle warning signs that something in a loan request does not add up. Why It Matters
Consumer lending has evolved. Regulations have expanded, fraud risks have grown, credit data has become more complex, and borrower expectations have changed. Training from a decade ago simply cannot reflect today’s lending environment.
This updated program reflects how consumer lending actually happens now, across compliance, credit evaluation, documentation, and lifecycle management. When lenders understand how these elements connect, decisions become more consistent, risk is better managed, and borrowers are served more effectively.
For institutions, that means stronger portfolios. For lenders, it means confidence. For borrowers, it means fair and responsible access to credit.
