“My name is Claire Bundy, and I serve as a Human Resources Coordinator at TowneBank. In my role I support the HR department with employee relations, talent development, and organizational initiatives that contribute to a positive workplace culture.
I am grateful to have been selected to participate in the CFTEA Board Leadership Launchpad Program. I believe this opportunity will not only deepen my understanding of how an effective board operates but also help me grow as a leader. I look forward to learning how to contribute meaningfully to a board’s mission and applying these skills to support both my organization and community in a more impactful way.
So far, the program has really helped me see what strong board leadership looks like and how I can grow into that role myself. Before starting, I didn’t fully understand how much intention and strategy go into being an effective board member. Through the program, I’ve learned that it’s not just about showing up to meetings—it’s about understanding the mission, asking the right questions, and helping guide an organization toward long-term success. It’s also made me reflect on my own leadership style and where my strengths can best support a team or organization.
One key learning point that stood out to me was the clear difference between governance and management in nonprofits. I used to think board members were more hands-on in daily operations, but now I understand that their true role is to focus on vision, strategy, and accountability. That perspective shift really helped me see how good governance creates space for staff to do their jobs effectively while keeping the organization aligned with its mission.
Moving forward, I plan to use what I’ve learned by being more intentional about separating strategy from operations in my own leadership work. I also want to continue developing my confidence as a board member – someone who listens, supports, and helps move the mission forward in a thoughtful way.”
